Week 3: Game Design Document

This week around, our team refined the nitty gritty on concepts and mechanics we wanted to implement. We decided to give the player a paint range of 2 blocks surrounding them and also have the cursor highlight the block it will be painting when hovering over it, if the block is non-paintable, the highlight will appear grey instead.

On the art and concept side, we revamped some of our existing designs for the interactables, which we now term “special creatures” or npcs. Ulala (Howling creature that lowers walls), Arie (Ramming creature that breaks obstructions in its path) and the newest addition, Gemi, a pair of twin creatures that allow free travel/teleportation between the two after the player saves one of them.

In addition to these, we also gave the story a bit more depth, to hopefully have something to entice the players to complete the game in its entirety even more.

We also began considering what atmosphere we wanted for our game, did we want something relaxing? That seemed like the best suited option for our game, so we decided to remove any mechanics that could kill the player that we had originally considered before. However, we are considering the boss level to be an exception to this. Leading into our next discussion, the final boss!

The final boss (Lacerta) is positioned in the center of a donut shaped arena. Lacerta roaring will trigger blocks to fall from the sky on the platforms, and if the player fails to move out of the way, they will be killed and have to restart. The player must use a combination of green and blue blocks to beat this level, green blocks to create platforms, and blue blocks to slide towards and damage Lacerta.

If time allows in the future, we would like to hopefully add some more non-puzzle related interactables that can be coloured, just to give the player the satisfaction of recolouring a grey world.
